New Work 2026
A piece for 11 dancers and 1 live musician
Running time: 60 minutes
Premieres August 6 & 8, 2026 | ImPulsTanz Festival – Vienna, Austria
With UNDERFLOW, I aim to highlight dance practices that develop outside institutional frameworks, in spaces that are often invisible yet essential: clubs, circles, informal venues,
and urban fringes. These spaces are places for sharing, transmission, experimentation, and connection. People dance there without the pressure of performance, paying particular attention to one another, to respect, and to collective energy.
It is this quality of presence and connection that I aim to bring to the stage. The project stems from an observation: many aesthetic traditions rooted in hip-hop, club, and social cultures coexist today, yet they still intersect too rarely within a shared artistic framework. Hip-hop, electro, waacking, krump, dancehall, coupé-décalé, and pantsula are all powerful languages, each carrying specific stories and contexts.
With UNDERFLOW, I’m not seeking to fuse these styles or erase their unique characteristics. On the contrary, the goal is to create the conditions for their coexistence—to allow each dancer to remain fully rooted in their identity and their dance, while remaining open to others, to influence, and to the unexpected.

A self-taught hip-hop dancer with a brilliant career, Amala Dianor enrolled in the advanced program at the National Center for Contemporary Dance in Angers, from which he graduated in 2002. For ten years, he performed as a dancer, drawing inspiration from a wide range of techniques. In 2012, he founded his own company after winning two awards at the 2011 Reconnaissance competition for his debut choreography, *Crossroad*.
The choreographer quickly made a name for himself in the dance world for the uniqueness of his elegant and organic style, which is rooted in a formal exploration of movement at the intersection of various styles.
Gliding with virtuosity from one movement language to another, he strips choreographic techniques of their spectacular elements, retaining only the raw movements. Drawn to encounters and dialogue between people, he develops a fusion dance that blends forms and opens up a poetics of otherness. Since 2014, he has collaborated with electro-soul composer Awir Leon, who creates the music for his performances. He occasionally partners with musicians, visual artists, actors, writers, and calligraphers…
In 2019, he was awarded the Medal of Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters, and in 2024 he was named an Officer of the Order of Arts and Letters.
In 2021, he launched a dance film series titled CinéDanse, which already includes six short films that have been selected for prestigious festivals. In 2022, he was among the four European choreographers selected by the Big Pulse Dance network.
That same year, he presented the Siguifin cooperation project in Europe, aimed at showcasing the creativity of artists based in West Africa, and choreographed a piece titled *Via Injabulo* for the South African urban dance group Via Katlehong, which had its French premiere at the Avignon Festival.
In 2023, the choreographer created a large-scale work for 11 dancers from around the world featuring live music, DUB, and a filmed dance concert titled *Love You, Drink Water*, in collaboration with composer Awir Leon. In 2024, he directed a new duet for two female dancers, titled *M&M*, blending dancehall and contemporary dance. At the same time, he fulfilled a commission from the LOOP youth audience network for a piece titled *Coquilles*, intended for audiences in daycare and preschool (ages 1–6).
In 2025, Amala Dianor created *Gesualdo Passione* with six dancers and six a cappella singers from Les Arts Florissants, conducted by Paul Agnew; the piece premiered at the Philharmonie de Paris.
His company’s repertoire now includes 23 works and 6 short films, and it performs an average of 90 shows per year in France and around the world, with the support of prestigious institutions.
A prolific artist, he enjoys grounding his artistic exploration in enduring themes and sharing his work with others.
