ARTISTIC STATEMENT
Circus, in this context, can be defined as the construction of the impossible—attempting the impossible, often succeeding, often failing—but this particular circus unfolds as if by chance; it is a circus of adventure, a circus built in full view, an unintentional circus. Here, risk is like an everyday occurrence; the accident, little by little, it has been tamed. It’s about complicating one’s life in public, rather than doing what one already knows how to do—an exploration of a circus of the moment and a circus of instinct, a circus of imbalance rather than balance, a circus where anything can happen, where acrobatics is the only possible path, where the feat is a way to break out of the mold, where the spectacular always arrives at the wrong moment—a game of increasingly foolish and perilous attempts, like a manual for everything you shouldn’t do.
Camille Boitel and Sève Bernard
Featuring:
• Lovisa – acrobat, daredevil, the one who always dares to go a little further. She throws herself into the unknown and draws others in her wake.
• Sini – shy and tiny, but stronger than she seems. She loves to climb; she always finds a way to reach the top.
• Jatta – the mother figure, a seasoned circus artist capable of balancing on her hands indefinitely, hanging by her hair, and contorting her body in every direction.
• Lukas – acrobat, dancer, and above all, a comedian. He teases and plays around, always with a twinkle in his eye.
• Joel – strong and unflappable, one of the world’s best trapeze artists. He likes to be in control. But things don’t always go as planned.
Produced by: Riksteatern, Esbo Teater and Vendsyssel Teater.
Co-produced by: Cirko – Center for New Circus. Utopiste-Cité international de arts du cirque.
With support from: Nordic Culture Point, New Classics Fund, and the French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs and Institut français, as part of the strategy to promote the international development of the cultural and creative industries.
