Le Grand n'Importe Quoi

A scientist has discovered the meaning of life and invites the whole world to a conference to present his findings… but things quickly spiral out of control: other characters storm the stage, new perspectives emerge, and certainties begin to crumble. What seemed undeniable suddenly becomes refutable.

Machine de Cirque returns with *Le Grand n’importe quoi—Life, Death, and Other Nonsense*: a show that takes the most mind-boggling question of human existence as its starting point—and refuses to answer it in a conventional way.

Between the infinitely small and the infinitely large, between the tragic and the ridiculous, the show reexamines our behaviors, our whims, and our great human obsessions. Little by little, deeply human themes emerge from scenes that appear lighthearted. Grief, love, curiosity, parenthood, and connection to others become concrete avenues for attempting to answer the eternal question of the meaning of life.

Inspired by the world of Monty Python, this show subverts conventions, takes unexpected turns, and cultivates the art of disruption. The most ordinary objects become extraordinary. Conventions crumble. Surprises pile up. And amid this skillfully orchestrated chaos, the circus becomes a way to think differently. It allows us to think with our bodies, to take risks, to trust, and to explore what reason cannot always grasp.

*Le Grand n’importe quoi – Life, Death, and Other Nonsense* is, in many ways, a return to Machine de Cirque’s roots.

Like our very first show, it was born from a group of artists who, above all, wanted to create together. From the very beginning, the performers wanted to get involved far beyond the stage, actively participating in the show’s conception, ideas, and writing. This collective creation has been part of our DNA since the very beginning.

It’s also a return to our roots because we’re putting humor back at the heart of the show. After exploring friendship, work, rituals, and even our relationship to art, we wanted to tackle a question bigger than ourselves: the meaning of life. But certainly not with seriousness or pretension.

Circus has always seemed more meaningful to us when it evokes feelings rather than offers explanations. Blind trust, a shared risk, an improbable feat, or a spectacular failure can sometimes reveal more about our humanity than lengthy explanations. So it is through the absurd, laughter, and wonder that we’ve chosen to tackle this big question.

We don’t claim to have found the answer. In our search for the meaning of life, we’ve mostly accumulated dubious theories, contradictions, a few acrobatic feats, and a whole lot of utter nonsense. That was more than enough to put on a show.
