Body Concert

Structured like a concert, the work arouses deep emotions that ultimately transcend the limits of human body and dance. This 10-act performance sets out to win the hearts of the audience through dance and music, and in doing so, takes us to a new destination. The exuberant opening act causes much excitement, while towards the end the audience find themselves captivated by every movement of the dancers who suggest new meanings and values of dance with their dynamic and engaging performance.

Since its first performance in Seoul’s Arko Arts Theater in 2010, Body Concert has emerged as one of the most frequently staged programmes. Thanks to its widespread popularity, it has even been described as ‘an ideal introduction to contemporary dance for the general public.’ In addition, Body Concert drew much critical acclaim and won the 2010 Best Performance Award at Critics' Choice. Later, the successful completion of its international tour confirmed its potential for global appeal.

Ambiguous Dance Company was founded by choreographer Boram Kim and dancer KyeongMin Jang in 2008. The name of the group describes the “undefinable and ambiguous” characteristics of their dance style. Escaping from genres and preconceptions, the group expresses what is in their hearts through bodily movement and music. Rather than focusing on delivering an artistic message or meaning, they intend to convey the true nature and purity of humanity, believing that the bodily expression of music and dance form the most accurate and truest language.

Boram KIM

Born in Korea, Boram Kim entered into the field of contemporary dance unconventionally. Working as a back-up dancer for 10 years, he began to wonder about how dance speaks to the audience, and with passion and ambition, he began to develop his own choreography.

Kim established his own dance company called “Ambiguous Dance Company” in 2007. To Kim, creating dance works flushes out uncertainties engrained within him. In the process of creating, stories and answers to these uncertainties are existentially and inherently revealed. Kim first begins this process by choosing music with which to work. Interpreting the music, movements begin to take form in his mind, intertwining with melodies and rhythms, like a shuttle weaving across a loom.

“A delirious Body Concert. [...] A kind of ultra-danced show.”

Kim Dunphy, The Sydney Morning Herald

“Body Concert is fresh, joyful and delirious - you've never seen anything like it. K-pop meets reggae meets baroque music; as quirky as Buto without the drama.”

Télérama

“This 10-act performance, built like a concert, features a full range of dance styles to bring the music to life.”

Culture Whisper

“Structured as a concert, the show is made up of 11 sequences showcasing a large variety of dance styles, with one thing in common: all are pulsating and exciting.”

London Korean Links

“Their pioneering hologram appearance at the BRIT awards amassed over 300 million views online, but now Ambiguous are here live breaking down barriers of genre and all preconceptions, to present a fresh, exciting and electric evening of dance work.”

The Korea Times

“If you've ever seen their dance, chances are you probably saw it on repeat. Ambiguous Dance Company, a group of sunglass-donning dancers showing off addictive dance moves in funky outfits inspired by Korean tradition, is the latest viral marvel to hail from South Korea. The focus on the visual details is a central part of the dance group's identity. One of the most prominent features of its avant-garde performance style is wearing sunglasses or goggles in most of its works. It started off as a makeshift device to help the dancers overcome their shyness or stage fright, and then developed into a concept that aims to have the audience only focus on the body and dance moves. In the recent videos that went viral, the sunglasses and goggles played a significant role in imbuing an eccentric yet hip vibe.”

Scène Web

“A popular show from Korea, Body Concert has been spreading joy since its premiere at Seoul's Arko Arts Theater in 2010. In an explosive nod to the history of dance, seven performers twirl like flexible ninjas, mixing hip hop, contemporary dance, classical ballet and clubbing. Ambiguous Dance Company's super-show embraces all styles in choreographic group sequences, duets and solos of breathtaking virtuosity. On the soaring stage, the community of performers in bathing suits, then in colorful shirts and leggings, assert their individuality to better join forces and release a generous dance doped with humor.”

Sortir aujourd'hui

“Classical ballet, hip hop, contemporary dance... "Body Concert" humorously revisits choreographic genres in a jubilant show. Korean artists are increasingly taking center stage internationally, confirming the country's creative vitality.”

Télérama

“this show for seven performers plays the mass-market card of a mix that rocks”

Coup de Théâtre

“the company continues to captivate audiences the world over with its “Body Concert”: a jubilant ode to the body and movement. Vibrant, energizing, dizzying, what a slap in the face!”
